If there is one British motorcycle brand that really needs to return, then Birmingham Small Arms would likely be at the top of many motorcycle enthusiasts lists.
We all thought that BSA has perished alongside the Do Do and never to return, however another Indian giant of the automotive and motorcycle trade are set to open a design operation in the West Midlands, UK
The new design HQ will be in Coventry and labelled as Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (M.A.D.E) and forming part of Mahindra Global Design Network which already includes the Pininfarina Design Turin in Italy and Mahindra Design Studio Mumbai in India.
Last year Mahindra pledged to bring back BSA with a range of electric and internal combustion engine motorcycles, in which they intend to build a new assembly plant in the region after the official opening this summer of the Coventry building.
It is no surprise that many of the much loved old ladies of the motorcycle world have been given a helping hand to strut their stuff again and it seems that Indian companies are the only ones with the financial might and willpower to get this done too.
However whilst some would argue that the company are not British anymore, that hardly seems a reason not to be excited and with a ready made willing market of over 1 Billion people who still value old British labels…this could be the start of big things for West Midlands motorcycle manufacturing and a bright future for BSA at least.
