Rodrigues the Hero at Dakar 2022 Stage 3

As if Bonnie Tyler herself were belting out a few tunes searching for a Hero, then comes along JOAQUIM RODRIGUES on his Hero 450 to take the spoils on Stage 3 of Dakar 2022 fought over AL QAISUMAH – AL QAISUMAH orbital.

Wearing Number 27, Rodgrigues has leapt up to 13th in the overall standings after an impressive start to the Dakar.

Overall leader Brit Sam Sunderland on the Gas Gas still holding firm although only by 4 seconds now over Van Beveren on the Yamaha finishing 17th and 9th respectively today on stage 3 where many competitors had some navigational issues to contend with once again.

Toby Price on the factory KTM finished a very respectable 2nd on the stage taking him to 11th overall and Ricky Brabec on the Honda ended up 7th on the stage and 15th overall some 50:39mins off the pace as he already intimated that his Dakar was over after the second stage…but rather too early to write himself off as the Dakar is one race that cannot be predicted until the last dune is toppled.

As if by preordained magic, yesterday’s stage winner Barreda Bort had a more difficult day in the sand with a stage finish of 24th some 10:32min behind the lead and now overall sitting in 12th position some 23:27mins behind Sam Sunderland in top spot.

Other Gas Gas rider Daniel Sanders ended 5th on the stage some 2:55mins behind the Hero, whilst last year’s winner now on the factory KTM team finished 8th some 4:28min behind and now the riders sit 5th and 8th respectively in the overall standings albeit Sanders picked up a 10min penalty so we could see some movement in this ahead of tomorrow’s stage 4 from Al Qaysumah to Riyadh.
