When you spend as much time as I do in the forests, then you tend to build up a sense of when the trees are talking to you.
Of course I do not mean verbalising but rather they give off tell tales signs or are communicating in some manner.
Whether it’s the wind that incites such a rebellious sound or the colours of the leaves that change as autumn sets in…they are always telling me something.
So, out and about over the last week, riding the tracks, trails and logging roads, I’ve really started to notice the subtle changes of colours of leaves and it won’t be long before October welcomes the great fall.
The forest floors are getting damp and even wet in places. Rain has created eroded paths downslope on some trails,, whilst the forest floor is building up more layers of fallen leaves.
Even the wildlife has become more brazen, as squirrels occupy the ground in search of food to store for the impending cold of winter.
The light is lethargic in the morning to illuminate the way ahead… and it fades fast in the evening too.
I love this time of year and I especially love riding my bike when it’s a crystal clear blue sky day and the sun bathes the stretches that I ride. Last year was a very dry autumn so I’m hoping for more if the same, which will mean more access to more stunning scenery.
I usually motor through the trails but recently I have found myself stopping more often than usual merely to take it all in and enjoy the moment.
It’s so easy to get carried away with the technical side of riding that you totally miss the point of the ride and the adventure of the journey. So this is where I will be over the next couple of months. Out on the trails, dodging the falling leaves and simply relishing in the moment.
